Dr. CHRISTOS EVANGELOU
PhD in Cancer Biology, Division of Molecular and Clinical Cancer Sciences, University of Manchester, UK. Areas of expertise include cancer immunology, melanoma research, cancer immunotherapy, and mechanisms of immunotherapy resistance. During my PhD research, I studied the role of chronic inflammation and the cytokine IFN-gamma in adaptation and immunotherapy resistance in melanoma. By integrating high-throughput transcriptomic analyses and employing various cancer cell lines and animal models, I have developed methods to predict response to immunotherapy in melanoma patients.
Dr. VERONICA HUGHES
Veronica Hughes received her PhD in medical science from the University of Florida, focusing primarily on cancer metastasis and therapeutic interventions.
Dr. MATTHIAS SCHRÖDER
PhD in Immunology at the Division of Immunopharmacology of the University Clinic of Frankfurt am Main. Involved in basic and applied research for immunological interventions to treat cancer for 13 years. Currently involved in the development of fusion proteins to activate receptors of the TNF-superfamily (CD40, CD27 etc.) at a small German Biotech company as Head of Assay Development.
Dr. AMRITA SARKAR
PhD in Chemistry with postdoctoral experience at The University of Manchester, UK. Author of 14 scientific publications in peer reviewed international journals.
Dr. JUSTINE BRAGUY
Medical & Scientific Illustrator/Animator
PhD in Biotechnology and Plant Science with BSc in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics and a Master’s in Biotechnology specialized in Synthetic Biology.

Course Overview. CRISPR technology is undoubtedly one of the breakthrough discoveries in this era in genetic engineering. Originally discovered as an intrinsic component of prokaryotic defence against viruses, the CRISPR/Cas system has the prospect of becoming the leading technology in medical research, industrial biology, agriculture, and biofuel in the future. Based on the effector genes, the CRISPR/Cas system can be functionally classified into classes 1 and 2. Class 2 contains a single effector nuclease and finds the most extensive applications, and includes type II (such as CRISPR/Cas9 system), V, and VI CRISPR/Cas systems. Whereas, the class 1 CRISPR system consists of multiple subunits of effector nuclease complexes, and includes the type I, III, and IV CRISPR/Cas systems.
Owing to its precise gene-editing capability, CRISPR has accelerated research related to drug design to treat diseases such as HIV and cancer that have since long remained a challenge for conventional therapeutics. In agriculture, it has helped to improve crop yield, resistivity to diseases, pests, heat and droughts, and improving nutritional content. The technology also finds application in cattle breeding programs. It allows targeted mutations such as insertion, deletion, or regulation of gene expression to obtain desirable phenotypes, improved productivity and resistance to certain diseases. If researched extensively, CRISPR/Cas system has an unprecedented scope of DNA rewriting, and together with synthetic biology it can build complex and programmable gene circuits, and expand its current applications in therapeutics, diagnostics, and biotechnology.
Course Timing. This course is designed to be completed within six months (180 days). Failing to successfully complete the self-evaluation test would then require you to revise the course again within the course of the next six months to complete your certification. Your credential would expire if the course isn’t completed within this time frame. You can engage with the course at times deemed convenient for your schedule. Your course progress can be tracked using the Completion Indicators in the course outline and on each unit page that note the completion of each lesson.
Certificate. This course relies on a system of self-evaluation for assessment of personal learning. Your certification course is complete with the successful passing of this self-evaluation test with minimum score of >70%. You can repeat the test multiple times in case of failure.
Remember to save and download your certificate, once obtained before the expiration date, which is after 180 days of course commenced.
Remember to take notes. Meanwhile you watch the lessons, try to write down concepts and key terms. Putting the lecture in your own words will help you remember.
